It All Begins With a Seed
In Bak Trakoun village, Pursat province, known for its strong farmer cooperatives and vibrant rural life, Verng Sony is quietly leading a transformation in rice farming. Sony cultivates three hectares of rice and also grows cassava and cocoa. He serves as vice-president of the Leach Rik Chamroeun Agricultural Cooperative, which has grown from 180 members in 2012 to nearly 300 farmers today.
Special mission delegation from FAO
On the morning of December 16, 2024, a special mission team from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations visited the Romdoul Tean Kam Agricultural Cooperative in Tean Kam Tboung village, located in the Tean Kam commune of Preah Net Preah district, Banteay Meanchey province.

Agricultural stakeholders convene at the Agricultural Cooperative Business Forum (ACBF 2024) to promote local products through contract farming models and inclusive partnerships.
Training on Communication4Change
A training session titled “Communication4Change” was successfully conducted on November 28-29, equipping 35 sub-national level government officials with critical communication skills to support Cambodia’s climate-resilient agriculture and fisheries initiatives.
Workshop on Reflection AWPB2025
On October 31, 2025, the PCRL project under grant financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a “Workshop on Reflection Progress of Project Implementation in 2024 and Preparation of the Work Plan in 2025 in Siem Reap Angkor.
Rice seedlings in the Rumduol Tean Kam AC
The Rice Seed Production Group (RSPG), with the support of the PCRL project, is currently engaged in collectively pulling out the rice seedlings in the Rumduol Tean Kam Agricultural Cooperative (AC) located in Tean Kam Tbong village, Tean Kam commune, Preah Net Preah district, Banteay Meanchey province.
Field Monitoring in Banteay Meanchey
On July 25-26, 2024, the PCRL project team, in collaboration with the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Department of Environment, conducted a field visit to monitor rice seed production activities of the Rice Seed Producer Groups (RSPGs) in Banteay Meanchey province.
Mission Survey in Kampong Thom
On August 6th and 7th, 2024, the PCRL project team, in collaboration with the GDA’s Department of Rice Crop (DRC) and the Department of Agricultural Land Resources Management (DALRM), as well as the Kampong Thom Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF), conducted a mission to survey on the current rice cropping system and climate-resilient rice (CR) varieties.
Quarterly Consultant Meeting
The Quarterly Consultant Team Meeting was conducted for one day on 12 July 2024 in the GDA meeting hall, with 26 participants (4 females). The meeting objectives were (1) to present the priority activities for implementation in PCRL’s Components 2 and 3, (2) to present the key results and reflection of challenges during the last quarter of the project implementation at sub-national levels, and (3) to present the draft concept notes of the assignment by three Intermittent Consultants.
Trainings
Rice is a key crop for Cambodian farmers to use as a daily food and economic crop. Rice covers about 75% of the agricultural land area, and rice production contributes about 15% of the total value added to agricultural products. In 2023, the total area of rice crops will be 3.55 million hectares, of which rainfed rice is 2.87 million hectares and dry season rice is 0.68 million hectares, an increase of 146,189 hectares or 4.30% compared to 2022. The total rice yield was 12.49 million tons (3.14 million tons of dry rice and 9.35 million tons of wet rice), an increase of 868,826 tons, equivalent to 7.47% compared to 2022.
Field Work Activities
Within the PCRL project, there are many multi-stakeholder field-works such as visits, assessments, inspections, and surveys for sharing the information and experiences with relevant stakeholders (field practitioners, model farmers, agricultural cooperatives, community protected area members, key experts, etc.).
PSC Meetings
The PCRL-PSC was appointed by the MAFF Minister in the Decision letter No. 397, dated 01 December 2023, responsible for guiding during the implementation period as well as decision-making to ensure that the efficient execution of the project leads to the achievement of the project objective and that the project maintains alignment with all relevant national policies.
Workshops
The first workshop [PCRL Inception Workshop] was successfully conducted on 26 October 2023, with a total participation of 82 (19 females). In the end, the whole workshop achieved better results than expected. Later, a Provicial Orientation Workshop was conducted in Siem Reap province on 1 February 2024, with a total participation of 89 stakeholders (17 women) from the national level and target provinces, including Siem Reap and Kampong Thom.
