Mission Survey in Kampong Thom

On August 6th and 7th, 2024, the PCRL project team, in collaboration with the GDA’s Department of Rice Crop (DRC) and the Department of Agricultural Land Resources Management (DALRM), as well as the Kampong Thom Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF), conducted a mission to survey on the current rice cropping system and climate-resilient rice (CR) varieties.

The aim was to identify locations for on-farm demonstrations and provide on-farm coaching to Rice Seed Producer Groups (RSPGs) under the support of the PCRL project. This comprehensive survey was conducted in three ACs: Kokoah Krav Thkum Thkeung, Sambo Prey Kuk, and Damrei Slab Mean Ponleu in Santuk, Prasat Sambo, and Kampong Svay districts, Kampong Thom province.

The PCRL project team has identified locations for establishing on-farm demonstrations for short-cycle climate-resilient rice (CR) varieties. They have also presented selection criteria for farmers to identify lead farmers and consulted with Kampong Thom PDAFF on the inventory production to characterize climate-resilient varieties. Additionally, the project team has developed a program for field demonstrations on CR rice varieties and climate-resilient techniques supporting Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) standards. The team will also conduct on-farm coaching for certified rice seed producer groups, following the support of registered rice seed by the PCRL project.

To complete this task, the PCRL project team will conduct its field survey in two phases. The first phase will take place from August 6th to 10th, 2024 in Kampong Thom and Siem Reap province. The second phase will take place from August 12th to 18th, 2024 in Pursat, Battambang, and Banteay Meanchey.

PCRL is a five-year joint initiative by the FAO, GDA of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and GDLC of the Ministry of Environment, funded by the Global Environment Facility.
